The song I’ve chosen is called “I should be proud”. It was written by Henry Cosby, Pam Sawyer and Joe Hinton in 1970. They weren’t the ones that sang the song. It was recorded by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, an American vocal girl group formed by three sisters, in 1957. This song talks about how the narrator was devastated on hearing that her loved one, who had been fighting in the Vietnam War, had been shot and killed in action. The group felt very identified with the song because one of their brothers had died in an accident related to the Vietnam War. I have chosen it because the narrator of the song says that he wants him, her loved one, not his honours for fighting the war. When there was a war all the soldiers’ relatives were proud of the soldiers, because it was normal, that the soldier had to die for his country. And in this song, we see that, that feelings weren’t always like that. The woman who is narrating the story is devastated for the death of her loved one. And as I said, she wants to be with him again, not the honour of fighting for the homeland.
