A hint of hope

The photo I have chosen was taken by the photographer Don Mcullin in 1968 in Hué, Vietnam. It shows a two-year-old child, who was found between the North Vietnamese and the American firing lines, being carried away from the horrors of war by a U.S. Marine Medic. The kid must have lost his parents during the shootings. This is a sample of the effects of the violence and cruelty that war entails, but despite this, we have not yet learned and continue to fight and kill each other.

In the foreground, I can see lots of children, some are grown-up, and others are still very young, that are surrounding a U.S Marine Medic that is in the centre of the picture and is carrying a little kid covered with a poncho. In the background, on the left side there is a wood house that could have been the place where the corpsman took the child to take care of him.

On the one hand, this photo evokes me feelings of sadness and impotence because situations like this one are happening all over the world and I can’t do anything to avoid them. On the other hand, looking at this image, I feel hope and faith in our society because I think we can still improve and someday, these situations are going to be part of our past. Wars are the cause of lots of destruction, death, misery, sadness and despair. However, this picture shows us that not everything’s lost and that there are still good people in the world that are ready to protect and take care of others.
